Sustainable tourism support
It’s easy to become more sustainable. That may seem like a bold claim, but it really is the simple changes here that add up to big, impactful, and meaningful results - not only to your business but to your visitors too. Saving energy, cutting water usage and reducing waste are all things you can do to help the environment while also reducing your running costs.
Key sustainability stats
-
The UK has made a commitment to net zero: that means us reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 100% (from 1990 levels) by 2050.
-
Around 30% of all food produced, is wasted (1.8 billion tonnes per year). This contributes around 8% of total greenhouse gas emissions – more than the entire aviation sector.
-
The tourism industry uses more than its fair share of water. In fact, it’s estimated that in some areas visitors use up to eight times as much water as local residents.
Small changes, big results
Taking that first bold step or changing your sustainability up a gear can seem daunting as there can be many decisions to make.
- Which tourism impacts do we prioritise?
- Which products or services should we focus on first?
- How do we communicate what we’re doing?
- Do we have the skills and resources to do this?
While these can seem like difficult questions to answer, the likelihood is that the answers already exist within your business. Why did you start it? What drives your decision-making? What is your mission?
Here are some questions to ask:
- Who are your key market segments and what matters to your customers?
- What defines your company culture? What do you most care about?
- Who are your key contacts (business partners, suppliers and networks) and what opportunities exist to strengthen relationships?
- What are your core products/services/activities and the impacts they create?
- How do you communicate and interact with customers, suppliers, and distributors?
- Culpability - what are your biggest risks and most material impacts?
Why not get your whole team together, discuss these points and how you can tackle them, share the responsibility and bring everyone along on the journey with you - make sure to keep your customers updated too!
